Reproductive System
Functions in gametes
• Production
• Storage
• Nourishment
• Transport
• Fusion to form a zygote (fertilization)
Includes
- Gonads
- Ducts
- Accessory glands and organs
- External genitalia (penis, vagina)
Male Reproductive System
Structure
Pathway of spermatozoa
Seminiferous tubules → Rete testes → Ductuli efferentes → Epididymis → Ductus deferens → Ejaculatory duct →
Prostatic urethra → Membranous urethra → Penile urethra
Anatomy
Mechanisms regulating temperature
• Cremaster muscle
○ Elevates testes closer to body: cold=contracts, hot=relaxes
• Countercurrent heat exchanger
○ Venules exchange cold to warm incoming arterioles
• Dartos muscle (subcutaneous)
○ Causes skin to wrinkle changes S.A
Layers covering testes
• Tunica albuginea
• Extending from TA = septa
○ Extends to epididymis forming lobules
• Interstitial cells secrete testosterone/androgen
Spermatogenesis
• Tight junction - blood brain barrier
After meiosis, cells are different to host
cell - needs to protect from immune system
Spermiogenesis
Spermatids → spermatozoa
Cells in testis assist
