D: Examine the uses of transducers, sensors, and other measurement devices.
P5:
Analogue and digital meters can be used as measurement devices in circuits. The main difference
between them is that they show a different representation of the quantity being measured.
An analogue meter acts as a multi meter in circuits to measure direct current providing a low
resistance. An analogue multimeter consists of a permanent magnet which moves a coil. It has an
analogue display which uses the deflection of a pointer on the scale to show the measurement of i.e.
Direct current voltage or current, Alternating current voltage or resistance. This works by using the
current which flows through the coil that will move in a magnetic field produced by the permanent
magnet. When inducing a high current, the galvanometer must be connected in parallel with a shunt
resistor in order to measure the currents as milli amperes.
A digital multimeter can be also used in circuits to measure different electrical quantities such as
current, voltage and resistance. However it can also measure temperature, frequency, capacitance.
The device shows the measurements through a display screen and only 2 connection ports are used
in order to measure electrical quantities.
Digital Analog
The measured quantity is shows as digits. The measured quantity is shown by using the
pointer on the scale
expensive Cheaper
High accuracy Low accuracy
Easier to use More difficult to use
The calibration is automatic The calibration is manual
M5:
Analogue meters are devices used to calculate and measure different electrical quantities such as
voltage, current, resistance. also in testing of transistors or diodes. The needle within the device will
move depending on an adjusted scale for different measurements. This device allows to calculate
different quantities when changing the setting of the switch. Compared to digital multimeter, an
analogue meter shows a more precise reading.
A multi meter can measure AC/DC current and/or voltage, resistance, and continuity, testing a
diode, it can also measure capacitance and frequency, testing batteries, the switch within a circuit
can be testes as well as detecting a broken power cable in the circuit. A multimeter is a precise
device that allows a reading to be made of up to 8 digits. In comparison with an oscilloscope which
can only show the wave shape the voltage is providing.
