PSY-101 WEEK 5 DISCUSSION 2 Character: Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Dahl & Schindelman 1964) The character Willy Wonka shows several specific identifying factors that represent Borderline Personality Disorder or BPD. BPD is a personality disorder centered around extreme, spastic and often inappropriate emotional reactions, poorly chosen or overall unstable relationship maintenance and uncontrollable impulsive behaviors. Wonka’s character shows evidence of this before even appearing on screen through social reaction and unchallenged bias evaluation. His emotions go from eccentric, but jovial at the start of the tour, childlike imaginative delusions, intense responses to actions, a manic obsession with danger and illustrating emotional fear. All four of the four D’s identified for diagnosing mental disorder are portrayed to the audience. Deviance and Danger, through a fascination with the creation of dangerous emotional situations and events, that also influence other individuals who are part of his environment. Dysfunction is a direct cause and result of Wonka’s Deviance that over a long period has altered his behaviors and his ability to manage his feelings healthily. The Distress is engrained a bit deeper into the plot of the film and identifies not only resulting factors of the first three diagnostic terms. It also shows his emotional connection to his candy factory and the distress in not being able to find a moral and ethical adolescent to continue his pure-hearted legacy after his demise. The different distresses collectively identified throughout, show his stress level and the emotional repercussions of not completing his task to find purity in society. The stressors are not limited to his personal inabilities in the use of positive coping methods, because he also adds stress through his realization of what society is developing into, which he does not have control over.
