Describe whether or not psychology can be considered a science (16 marks)
One key feature of science is that all phenomena have to be observable. For example, the behaviourist
approach in psychology states that the focus should be on observable behaviors only. This means that
only behaviours that can be observed can be measured. However, the psychodynamic and cognitive
approaches focus on the mind which is a hypothetical construct and, therefore, cannot be observed. E.g.
the idea of the id in the psychodynamic approach.
