P3-Explain at least four environmental factors that may influence
communication and interpersonal interactions in your Oakland
setting

Background noise

Stretch and Whitehouse (2010) says that “a noisy environment may
therefore be difficult and unpleasant for someone who is using a hearing
aid”. Background noise makes it very difficult to hear what someone is saying to
you. This is because there’s a high chance that you can get sidetracked by the noise
around you so you will not be listening to what the person who you are talking to is
saying. If you are not listening to someone they may think you don’t care what
they’re saying and view you as rude. However if there is no background noise at all,
some people may feel uncomfortable by this and feel like the conversation is never
ending so usually muffled background noise is sometimes beneficial. Within the
Oakland setting there could be various background noise for example at meal times
or during a staff shift change over. In order to overcome background noise within the
Oakland setting the source of the noise must first be identified so that it can be
eliminated in the future. Within the Oakland setting if a care worker wants to speak to
a service user they would need to find a quiet room so that communication is
effective.

Lighting

Poor lighting can strain a person’s eyes leading to headaches or migraines. Poor
lighting can also affect communication because they won’t be able to see each
other's facial expressions which could lead to miscommunication. On the other hand
if the lighting in a room is too bright it can cause headaches and make people feel
agitated. In order to overcome the barrier of poor lighting or lighting that is too bright
within the Oakland setting the care workers should find the right balance of lighting
that everyone is happy with to prevent service users getting headaches.Within the
Oakland setting it is important for the lighting to be at a normal level because if a
care worker is trying to speak to a deaf service user they would rely on lip
reading, facial expressions and body language to enhance their understanding but if
the lighting in the room is too dull communication may be ineffective.

, Seating

Seating could also have an impact on communication within health and social care
settings for example if you sitting too close to a service user they may feel
uncomfortable and fearful.Whereas if you are too far away from them then you will
need to speak louder so that they can hear what you’re saying and they may feel like
you are being aggressive.Within the Oakland setting care assistants must ensure
that they communicate with the service users in the right way.For example they may
need to sit closer to a service user who has a hearing impairment as opposed to
another resident who can hear perfectly well but just has mobility issues. To
overcome this barrier care workers should ensure that they keep a reasonable
distance so that the service users within the Oakland setting feel comfortable.

Setting
If a room is too hot, stuffy or cold it may lead to ineffective communication as it can
make people feel tired or stressed which could make communication between them
ineffective. To overcome this barrier the air conditioning should be on so that the
temperature of the room doesn’t prevent effective communication.

P3-Explain at least 10 barriers that may influence communication and
interpersonal interaction in your Oakland setting

Language needs/preferences

Language needs and preferences could influence communication and interpersonal
interactions in health and social care settings.Due to the fact that Britain is a
multicultural society many people have a preferred first language. For some people
their first language is not English which could impact them negatively if they are
living in the UK as they will have difficulties understanding what people are saying as
communication would be received but not necessarily understood. For those who’s
first language is not english they may not understand people who use slang.Even
though using slang for some people may be a norm if they are speaking to someone
who is foreign they would find it difficult to understand what they are saying as it is
not proper english. Luckily, slang is frowned upon in formal settings as it displays a
tone which is too casual. It is also considered unprofessional and shows a lack of
respect for the receiver.
