, ABSTRACT
The aim of this research report is to establish the rights of an unmarried father in
respect of his children and the rights of grandparents in respect of their grandchildren.
The research begins with an introduction that gives a general summary of the paper
and the research question. The research focuses on parental rights and
responsibilities, with further focus on the acquisition of parental rights and
responsibilities in relation of a child’s mother, unmarried father and grandparents. The
research will also assess in detail the responsibilities in respect of the child’s parents
and the child’s grandparents, in which an overview of care, contact, guardianship and
maintenance will be discussed. The paper examines the child’s best interest and its
definition. Lastly, the conclusion summarises the paper’s main points.
