• Research focused on the qualities (properties) of objects and phenomena
• Often related to the interpretation of human interactions (e.g. in business)
• As occurring in their natural - usually complex - setting
• Based upon textual data (e.g. interviews) and (participant) observation
• With an open research attitude
• Open ended process

• Descriptive / explanatory / predictive questions
• Qualitative research is very suited to generate theory (open research question)
• Quantitative research is very suited to test theory (closed research question)

Elements of a qualitative research design:
• 1 Choice of research strategy (case study, ethnography, grounded theory, focus group)
• 2 Choice of unit of analysis
• 3 Sampling / case selection
• 4 Choice of data collection methods
• 5 Choice of data analysis methods ; Dit rijtje kennnen.
- 2. Unit of analysis: (op welke groep heeft het betrekking)
• The unit of analysis is that about which you want to draw conclusions
-e.g. group(s); project(s).
• A case is one instance of the chosen unit of analysis
-e.g. a specific group; a specific project
• The unit of observation is the level at which you collect the data
-e.g. individuals within a group; events with a project.
• The unit of observation and the unit of analysis can be the same, but the unit of
analysis can also be at a higher level of aggregation.
