How is migration indicated to health?
Refugees or migrants?
- Migrant is someone who chooses to move to improve their life in some way
- Must go through the usual migration procedures.
- Some are asylum seekers:
- A person who has left the country of origin has applied for recognition
as a refugee in another country and is awaiting a decision on his or
her application.
- So, some who have sought protection as a refugee but who are
claiming refugee status have not yet been assessed.

- Refugee is someone who is fleeing arms, conflict or prosecution and cannot safely
return home.
- Are protected under International Law.
- Have the right to asylum.
- Every refugee is at some point an asylum seeker
Importance of migrant and refugee health?
- Culturally diverse patients
- Because of increasing migration healthcare systems and professionals are
increasingly met by cultural and diverse patients and therefore need more
knowledge on this.
- Moral perspective
- Countries deal with migrants under their own migration laws.
- Countries deal with refugees through norms of refugee protection and
asylum.
- Pragmatic societal perspective
- Health promotes integration and integration promotes health.
- Health migrants are needed to contribute in a social-economic sense
to the immigration country.
Scope of migration in the Netherlands
- 204,615 international immigrants in 2015: 1,2% of the population
- Largest group came from: 1. Syria 2. Poland (mainly due to labour) 3. Eritrea 4. India
(mainly due to labor) 5. Ethiopia
- The net immigration is partly due to the growing inflow of asylum seekers from Syria.
