UNIT 23 FORENSIC EVIDENCE, COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
LEARNING AIM B: INVESTIGATE A STIMULATED CRIME SCENE USING FORENSIC PROCEDURES.
INVESTIGATING A CRIME SCENE.

,  B.P4 DESCRIBE THE FORENSIC METHODS USED TO PROCESS A SIMULATED CRIME SCENE.
 B.M3 JUSTIFY THE FORENSIC PROCEDURES USED TO PROCESS A SIMULATED CRIME SCENE.
 B.P3 CARRY OUT A FORENSIC EXAMINATION OF A SIMULATED CRIME SCENE, USING APPROPRIATE FORENSIC PROCEDURES
TO GATHER BIOLOGICAL, PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL EVIDENCE.

FORENSIC EXAMINATION AND PROCEDURES USED TO PROCESS A SIMULATED CRIME SCENE:

First Attending Officer (FAO):

The FAO is the first person to attend the crime scene and they will carry out their duties such as restricting and securing the crime
scene using tape to prevent access to unauthorised personals and will to protect the evidence from being destroyed or tampered
with. They will call emergency services if needs be to preserve life or danger. Upon the arrival of authorised personnel any relevant
information will be shared. During the simulated crime scene, the FAO was present to make sure that the procedures were being
carried out correctly and any questions that needed to be asked were asked such as what has happened and occurred.

CASE CIRCUMSTANCES:
College cleaners reported a lifeless body in Lab G312 early on Thursday morning (called to 999 at 7.36am), an ambulance was
called and arrived at 8.06am but they were unable to revive the patient. Cause of death is unclear, however evidence of a
second unidentified person being present at the scene caused concern to the paramedics who called the police to investigate.
CCTV and College ID entry/exit logs have been requested but have not yet been received. The victim has since been identified as
37-year-old, Harry Potter. Mr Potter has worked as the Head of Science at Uxbridge College for the last 8 years. He is known as a
very strict and hard to please boss and there have been a number of staff complaints about his behaviour, including for unfair
treatment towards his ex-wife who works as a Science Technician for the College.

PREVENTION OF CONTAMINATION
Prevention of contamination means that all personnel should wear appropriate PPE, such a body suit, gloves, and masks, foot
gloves. So that the contamination of any biological or chemical evidence do not occur. Such as bodily fluids, blood which could help
identify the potential victim.

RESTRICTION OF ACCESS
After the murder of the victim Harry Potter aged 37, the scene was restricted by the FAO present at the time using yellow tape, so
that evidence is not contaminated destroyed or tampered with, and unauthorised personnel such as the public, victims and
potential suspects do not enter. The FAO had entered the crime scene wearing full Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) for Health
and safety purposes to protect themselves from any biological, chemical, and physical evidence and the evidence from their DNA.
The FAO At 7:36am had called 999 emergency services and an ambulance had arrived at 8:06am so that life of Mr Potter could be
saved but was unable to do so. The scene had occurred in Lab G312 early morning at the far corner on right-side of the lab around
the monitor, table, and window.

Yellow crime scene tape to restrict access from un-authorised
personnel. To protect and secure the safety of evidence.

OBSERVATION AND RECORDING OF THE SCENE
After the restriction and off access by the FAO, the authorised personnel’s such as the SOCO will enter the crime scene and the FAO
will pass on useful information which can help them. The SOCO will also observe and record their finding by looking around and will
use the information given by the FAO to discuss with one another and to come up with a common pathway which they would all
follow as a team by figuring out the points of entry and exists and determining the location of the scene and evidence to come up
with an idea of what may have happened at the time. Photographs, sketches, and notes are taken during the investigation so that if
anything had been moved, missed these will be evident later in court.
The 4 SOCO’s had come up with a search pattern and had decide to approach the crime scene using the parallel which will help to
search for evidence that could be of value and will allow also allow the evidence collector to collect the evidence. The parallel
pathway will allow the SOCO will form a line from one end to another of the crime scene and will make their way down to the other
