Language proficiency refers to the ability of a person to read and write in the language.
When we talk of academic success there are quite several factors that contribute to it
with school environment, parental support, natural abilities as well as language
proficiency. Amongst all the factors this essay seeks to explore more on the influence
of language proficiency on the overall academic performance. In our exploration we
stand by the notion that language proficiency is critical to the overall academic success
of students
Language proficiency will influence how one excels in their academics since it is the
medium of learning. Studies have shown that those learners that are not proficient in
English tend to struggle more in their academics when it is not their native language.
In the learning environment, communication is the key and therefore if a student is
struggling with the language that is used as a medium of instruction it makes it much
more difficult to grasp the concepts. The main challenge lies in that the child does not
understand the language which is the first barrier and then second one is to
understand the actual content which makes it very complex. This is the reason why
the curriculum normally advocates for the use of native languages and the gradual
introduction of English as the medium of instruction at a much later stage.
