Question 1

1.1) Early childhood development can be seen as a term which applies to the
process by which children from birth to the age of 9 years grow and develop
physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, spirtitually and morally.

1.2) Parental ethno-theories links socialisation to cultural values and it is therefore
said that it is cultural models that parents hold regarding children, families and
themselves as parents. It is also the ideas that adults or parents have about
what they consider to be important in the development of young children, for
example;
✓ Many African parents allow their older children to look after their younger
siblings, which demonstrates that parents see children as being able to be
responsible and nuturing.
✓ Social responsibility – Parents want their children to be humble, respectful
and cooperate with them (parents) and their peers.

1.3) Africanisation has become a very important issue for people in search of
unity, a sense of belonging and a sense of pride in who and what they are and
what they stand for and learners should have the opportunity from a very
young age to express themselves, while also reflecting on the reasons behind
their thoughts, feelings and actions. Therefore when relating Africanisation to
early childhood education, it involves incorporating, adapting and integrating
other cultures into and through African visions to provide the dynamism,
evolution and flexibility so essential do the development of a young child.

1.4) Music Lesson – Include songs from various cultures so that the learners are
able appreciate different African music and the rich culture it represents as
well as to perhaps learn to play one or two different African instruments, OR
Storytelling - In many African societies, an important aspect of traditional
education is concerned with teaching oral literature using folktales, riddles and
proverbs which aim at moulding character and providing children with moral
values like honesty, integrity, courage and solidarity.

1.5.1) In my opinion Western perspectives/theories are dominant in South-Africa’s
EDC because of the inequalities embedded in South African education from
colonial and apartheid days, where it has been promoted from a position of
power.

1.5.2) The theories are presented as evidence based on facts.

1.5.3) He wants to stress the importance and fact that ECD programmes in Africa
are still grounded in Western perspectives and theories, because the
evidence of this is based on or characterized by the methods and principles of
science, and it is therefore unquestionable as it is a fact.
