Question 1

1.1 Explain the meaning of each of the following words as they are used in context:

Foundling: Nomkhosi was abandoned as a young child by her own father and she was
then found and cared for by Monya

Twine: To enfold or wrap around. Monya wanted to wrap his coils around Nomkhosi.

Coils: If you coil something, you form a loop or a ring around something. In this case
Monya the Phyton wanted to curl around / loop around Nomkhosi.

Immortality: Unending existence of the river.

Maid: River virgin (She would be an unmarried young woman).

Mesmerized: Monya captured the complete attention of Nomkosi and the hypnotised
her.

Pined: To miss or long for something or someone. In this case Somate longed for her
sister Nomkhosi.

Peered: Somate looked with difficulty into the deep, silent pool to ask the fishes where
her siter Nomkhosi could be.

1.2 Write a paragraph in which you discuss how this story reflects the elements of a folk
tale.

A folk tale is normally a story that's part of a particular ethnic groups’ oral tradition
that's passed down from one generation to the next. African folk tales are believed to
have the power to hold the community together and they serve to communicate morals
and traditions to the young in preparation of life's obstacles and to teach them lessons.
Traditionally, adults passed these stories down to children while gathered around a
village fire and the story of “The River Maiden” is captured in a book of short traditional
stories and coincidently or deliberately titled “Zulu fireside tales”. Folk tales are usually
set in a time far from here and start with “Once upon a time”, the opening line of “The
river Maiden says “It is a long time ago now since it happened”, which is basically the
same as “Once upon a time”. Along with a clear moral, or a lesson, African folk tales
commonly include paranormal elements, for example encounters with talking animals
and other non-human creatures. Folk tales also subtly incorporate character traits like
caring, courage, trust resourcefulness and in this case also jealousy from Nomkhosi’s
father.
