NURS 623 Adult II – Test One (Cary Review) LYME DISEASE Stage 1: Called “Early localized Lyme disease” and may last for 1 to 4 weeks. Symptoms include: • A circular rash that may expand over time (erythema migrans), which may also have a bulls-eye appearance • Flu-like symptoms, such as: o Fever o Chills o Joint and muscle pain o Stiff neck and headache o Fatigue o General feeling of illness o Swollen lymph glands Treatment: • Doxycycline • Cefuroxime • Amoxicillin Stage 2: Called “Early disseminated Lyme disease”. Symptoms: can range from mild to severe, or not at all. o Flu-like symptoms - similar to or worse than those in Stage 1 Treatment: Usually involves a course of oral antibiotics such as: o azithromycin o doxycycline - should not be given to: It may occur weeks to months after infection. o Fever, chills, joint and muscle pain, stiff neck and headache o Swollen lymph nodes or glands o Fatigue o Sore throat o Visual disturbances such as blurry vision o Paralysis or weakness in the face o Pain or numbness in the bite area o Heart palpitations  children eight years of age  nursing or pregnant women. o amoxicillin o cefuroxime o a 10 to 30-day course of IV antibiotics The choice of antibiotic depends on the stage of the disease and the symptoms. o Common choices include doxycycline, amoxicillin, azithromycin, cefuroxime, and ceftriaxone.
