Measurement of cognitive functioning, with specific reference to the differences
between group and individual tests of intelligence.
Cognitive function refers to a persons’ ability to process thoughts. Cognition primarily
refers to an individual’s memory, speech and their reading ability. General cognitive
functioning measures are used to obtain a person’s general intelligence. These tests
can be done individually or as part of a group. The difference between the individual
tests and group tests are as followed.
Individual Tests:
In an individual tests only one person at a time is tested to measure or obtain an
indication of the person’s level of general intelligence and cognitive strengths and
weaknesses which can then be used for a variety of different purposes. Many open
ended questions are usually used in these types of tests resulting in the individual to
give more elaborate answers. On the tests some of the instructions are very individually
orientated and can differ from test subject to test subject all depending on the type of
answer the individual gives. In certain instances some of the question items can be
omitted completely depending on the individual’s answers. With individual tests there is
also an additional aspect where the test subject is closely observed while attempting
the tests, and with this behavioural observation additional data can be gathered.
Group Tests:
Opposite to the individual tests this tests is administered to groups of people at the
same time. In these group tests most if not at times all of the questions are in a multiple
choice format with uniform and standard instructions and scoring. There are no
personalised questions, all examinees answer the same questions/items in the same
order. In these tests there is also not a behavioural observation aspect included.
Group tests are usually designed for a more academic purpose as they are used to
assess the cognitive abilities that are relevant to academic achievements. There is a
combination of verbal and non-verbal subtests that provide a total ability score. In
certain instances only verbal tests or only non-verbal tests are used. This is all to
ensure the development of culture-fared tests are administered and that one culture is
not disadvantaged over another.
