“A person cannot teach another person directly; a person can only facilitate another's
learning” (Rogers, 1951).

Section A
1. Person-Centred Therapeutic Approach
Carl Rogers broke away from the more traditional thinking that highly pathologised
normal reactions such as anxiety and trauma. In the years leading up to the person-centred

theories saw the patient as having an illness beyond their own control. In these deterministic
theories the patient was not seen as being able to give meaningful input into their own
treatment and recovery (McLeod, 2008). Rogers was a pioneer in the humanistic approach in
the 1950s which believes that the clients condition improves with a warm, understanding and

worth, and reduce incongruence between the ideal self and the actual self. This enables the
person to function more effectively (Miller, 2012). At the very centre of the person-centred
approach is the self or self-concept. Carl Rogers self-concept is quoted by Saul McLeod as
“the organized, consistent set of perceptions and beliefs about oneself". These are the values
that characterise 'I' and 'me', our worth and value, and our abilities and limitations (McLeod,
2008).
1.1 Key concepts
A person-centred approach is an ongoing process of supporting a person towards their
personal goals. Humanistic therapists avoid the role of leading the client and view themselves
as equal partners working together. Coaching, brainstorming together, sharing feedback and
ideas, and the client’s current perception is explored in the here-and-now. The client is
resourceful and capable of self-understanding. Self-understanding leads to making
constructive changes which will enhance their lives in future (Corey, 2014, p. 164). The
therapist creates an environment that fosters this self-growth with three core emotional skills.
They facilitate an approach where clients are on a journey of self-discovery, in a safe place
where they will not be judged. These core qualities are:
