Nursing Care of Newborns: Ensure Identification of newborns, car seat safety
Identification (using two different identifiers) is applied to the newborn immediately after
birth by the nursing
Baby, mom, and dad are identified by plastic identification wristband with permanent
locks that must be cut to be removed. Newborns name, sex, date, time of birth, and
mothers health record number.
Each time the baby is taken to parent always verified mother and baby
All nurses or staff are required to wear photo identification badges
The newborn is not to be given to anyone who does not have a photo identification badge
that distinguishes that person as a staff member of the facility maternal newborn unit
The newborn should have one band placed on the ankle and one on the wrist; the
newborn’s footprints and mothers thumb prints are taken.
Many facilities have locked maternal newborn units that required staff to permit entrance
or exit. Some have sensor device on the ID band or umbilical cord clamp that alarm if
baby is being removed from the facility.
