Lecture 1: Greening Goliaths

Article: Greening Goliaths versus Emerging Davids – Theorizing about the role of incumbents
and new entrants in sustainable entrepreneurship. (Hockerts, K. and Wüstenhagen, R).

De grafiek hierboven staat centraal in dit artikel en in dit vak in zijn algemeen.

De Emergings Davids links en de Greening Goliaths rechts werken beide toe naar een
‘Sustainability Transformation’ of an Industry. De Emerging Davids enerzijds doen dit door
met hun duurzame werkzaamheden te groeien waardoor ‘Market Share’ stijgt en de
Greening Goliaths anderzijds doen dit door hun Environmental en Social Performance te
verhogen.

In this paper they talk about the interplay between Emerging Davids en Greening Goliaths
and how it is that their compounded impact influences the sustainable transformation of
the industry.

Firm are divided into 2 categories:
1. Greening Goliaths: the larger incumbent firms that are using incremental (in kleine
stappen) innovation to bring more sustainability in their firm.
2. Emerging Davids: start ups or young companies that uses disruptive innovation (hele
grote stap van innovatie en disruptent voor huidige bedrijven).

Both play a role in the sustainable transformation but on another level and in different ways.
This is because of their starting point. For the world, interaction between these firms is
needed.

3

, Characteristics of both firms:

The age en size of the companies are straight forward. The ‘objective function’ of both is an
important one. You see that the objectives of the Emerging Davids are more pointed
towards social and environmental performance, or even so important as economic
performance and for the Greening Goliaths the important objectives are economic. Social
and environmental performance is complementary. The conclusion is that their ways of
doing business is totally different.

Examples of specific innovation for both firms:

Innovations can be disruptive or incremental
Only Davids introducing disruptive innovation can be classified as disruptive innovation.

Co-evolution: the compounded effect of Davids and Goliaths that move the industry toward
a more sustainable industry. It is the way how Davids en Goliaths influence each other.

The authors argue that:
• Incremental innovation is not enough to maintain critical levels of natural and social
capital
• There is need for transformational change
• Sustainable entrepreneurship plays a role in this

Definition sustainable entrepreneurship: the discovery and exploitation of economic
opportunities through the generation of market disequilibria (marktonevenwichtigheden)
that initiate the transformation of a sector towards an environmentally and socially more
sustainable state.
