What does the examiner want to see in my argument?

1. Points ordered in a clear and logical way that develop your argument. This can be done by using:
a. Paragraphs
b. Use Connectives – words that join ideas together. Use connectives to link and develop your
points/paragraphs – these help the reader to be able to follow your argument. ‘moreover...’,
‘therefore…’, ‘however…’, ‘firstly…’, ‘secondly…’, ‘although…’, ‘to conclude…’.,
‘Furthermore...’ ‘Finally.....’, ‘Also...’
c. Introductions to introduce you initial ideas
d. Conclusions to sum up and reinforce your argument.
2. Make your writing interesting and engaging throughout.
3. A range of different language techniques to create interest. These could be:
 P = Personal language
 E = Emotive Language
 R= Rhetorical Question
 F = Facts and Opinions
 E = Exaggeration
 C = Commands
 T = Triple Emphasis.
 Anecdotal Evidence - a personal story.
 Repetition
4. A range of different vocabulary
5. A range of different punctuation used accurately and effectively.
6. A variety of different sentences used for effect.
7. Accurate spelling.

Use the following model to help you:

1. Powerful Opening
 The opening paragraph needs to clearly explain what you are arguing
 Make the first sentence interesting. It needs to grab the reader’s attention. You could use a short
sentence, command or rhetorical question.

2. Give the first and most important reason
 Make sure that you develop your point – go into detail.
 Provide the reader with evidence to support your ideas. This could be either a fact, opinion or an
anecdote.
 Then explain your point in detail. Use at least 2 of the PERFECT Techniques.

3. State the next most important reason

 Develop each point in detail and clearly explain the reasons.
 Provide the reader with evidence to support your ideas. This could be either a fact, opinion or an
anecdote.
 Then explain your point in detail. Use at least 2 of the PERFECT Techniques.

4. Powerful ending/conclusion

 End with one strong sentence that will stick in your reader’s mind.
 End with a command or rhetorical question to reinforce your overall opinion.
