Chapter 4:
Read from ‘At nine O’clock in the morning’ to ‘You’re taking miss baker to tea’
Recast this conversation from Gatsby’s perspective.
Include:
 His thoughts about Nick’s reactions.
 His feelings throughout the conversation.

Transformation:
It was late in the morning that I pulled up outside Nick Carraway’s estate in my cream rolls Royce, I
saw him at the window as I pulled up. He must’ve heard me coming up the drive.
My hands were shaking with nerves as I fumbled my way out of the car, quick to lean against the
dashboard and act casual before Nick suspected anything was off.

“Good morning old sport. Since we’re having lunch together today, I thought you’d like a ride.” I
bellowed with confidence as Nick walked down the drive. His eyes were wide with wonder as they
gazed over the car. I was glad as I had purposely brought it to the house to impress him and ease his
mind.
“Pretty, isn’t it? Come on hop in.” I motioned with my hand and just as planned nick sat in the
passenger seat.
We cruised downtown till we met a stoplight. It was at this point I decided to start the conversation.
“Say Nick? What do you think of me anyhow?” I started; a look of astonishment crept over his face
as if he was taken aback by the question.
“Well, I think you’re- you’re a successful man, you live an admiral life…” Nick began, making general
statements I’d heard from many others.
“Well good, I don’t want you getting the wrong idea about me old sport. With all these non-truths
about me going around these days.” I explained to which Nick nodded as if he knew about these
non-truths and understood my concern.
“I want to tell you a little about me old sport.” I stated. This was it, the moment I had been leading
up to.
“I come from a wealthy family in the mid-west - all dead now. I was brought up here in America.
Where? Oh San Francisco, but I was educated in Oxford, it’s a family tradition you see.” I began to
recite the sentences I had been practicing all night, leaving no room for error. I had to convince him.

“When my family died, I received their fortune, and travelled around Europe living like a young
rajah, collecting jewels and hunting big prey to make up for a terrible thing that happened to me a
long time ago.” I continued to explain, glancing sideways at Nick to see if he believed what I was
saying. He looked a little unsure, so I continued in an attempt to convince him further.

“Then came the war old sport. I was so desperate to die, I accepted a commission of first lieutenant
in the beginning and was promoted to be a major after my success in the Argonne Forest. Every
Allied government gave me a decoration – even Montenegro.” I stated with emphasis, handing him a
service medal that stated ‘Orderi di Danilo, Montenegro, Nicolas Rex.’ I watched as Nick read, his
eyes filled with belief and fascination. I then handed him a picture of me and a dozen young men in
an archway at oxford and watched as his mouth melded into the shape of an ‘o’.
‘I need to request something of you today old sport, so I wanted you to know a little about me.’ I
stated firmly.
“At lunch?” Nick asked.
“Oh no no in the afternoon, I found out you’re taking miss Baker to tea, she has agreed to discuss
this matter with you there.” I explained and observed as Nick’s eyebrows suddenly furrowed at the
mention of Miss Bakers name which made my heart skip a beat momentarily.
