Muscle Tissue

Muscle tissue controls all functions involved with movement, and are specialised
for contraction. The cells are known as myofibres or muscle fibres.
They work from skeletal motion to breathing and cardiovascular function, to
balance and posture. Muscle is also used to support and scaffold internal
organs. Muscles are used in many processes, including body temperature
regulation. The list goes on.
Muscles can contract to control movement, are extensible and can stretch, they
are elastic and can deform back to their original shape and are excitable and
respond to stimuli.
There are three types of muscle tissue:
1. Cardiac muscle (pushes blood and maintains
pressure).
2. Skeletal muscle (movement).
3. Smooth muscle (pushing fluids along the

Cardiac and smooth muscle are involuntary,
while skeletal is voluntary.
Skeletal Muscle:
Skeletal muscle fibres are long and
can be up to 30cm (like in the
thigh).
Length given by the fusion of
hundreds of precursor cells
called myoblasts.
