Introduction:
The reader is introduced to the topic fully in the introduction
Set the context by reviewing the topic in a general way
Explain why the topic is important
Author’s opinion is revealed through a strong thesis statement.
Define relevant concepts in the introduction
Discussion of the topic
Typically made up of 3 paragraphs/sections (main headings, break down into subheadings)
Each paragraph/section should be limited to the discussion of one general idea
Each paragraph/section in the body of the essay must have some logical connections to the
thesis statement
Explain how and why the evidence supports the thesis statement
opposing views should be included
Argumentative essays should also consider and explain differing points of view regarding
the topic by dedicating one paragraph/section to discussing conflicting opinions on the
topic.
You should note how opinions that do not align with your thesis statement might not be
well informed or how they may be out of date.
Include:
Previous attempts to solve the argument: These are provided from literature.
The consequences of the problem: This deals with its positive or negative impact.
Repercussions of the argument in case it is not finally solved: This should be supported
with sources.
Connecting the argument: with the provided facts (provide examples or cases that support
your thesis statement).
Conclusion/ closing argument
In view of your argument, come to a conclusion about your thesis statement.
Restate why the topic is important, review the main points, and review your thesis
statement.
Synthesis the information in the body of your essay.
You may also want to include a short discussion of more research that should be done in
light of the argument that you brought forward.
