Een deugdzaam mens

• Ethica Nicomachea
• Doel = Eudaimonia
- Deugden als eerlijkheid, loyaliteit, medeleven, zelfbeheersing, vriendelijkheid,
integriteit, etc.
- Nood aan praktische wijsheid of morele voortreffelijkheid
- Ons karakter is belangrijk
- We zijn niet geboren met deugden, maar ze worden aangeleerd
- Het helpt om een ethisch oordeel te maken

Scout who is encouraged by his scoutmaster to take the Boy Scout slogan seriously and “do a good turn daily." The scout

they’ll promote. This world is filled with misinformation, due to our short attention spans. Most people get there information
from bits and pieces propagated by the evening news or a flashy headline. I expected more from your center. While the
details of your ad are most likely accurate, you’ve done an injustice to your community. You’ve flown off course and I’m
saddened by your decision to promote this hateful headline.”

- Pro’s
• In vele gevallen is het logischer om te kijken naar deugden, eerder dan rechten
of gevolgen
• Persoonlijke relaties kunnen moreel relevant zijn voor beslissingen te maken
• Erkent hoe moreel besluitvormingsproces vaardigheden ontwikkelen ove r de
tijd heen
• Erkent de rol van emoties
• Streeft naar een ethische correct houding ten aanzien van anderen en
zelfreflectie
- Contra’s
• Hoe ‘objectiveren’ van individuele deugden?
• Moeilijk toepasbaar als richtlijnen voor beleid
• Als deugden worden aangeleerd, wie is er dan verantwoordelijk voor ‘slechte’ keuzes?
