Public Services BTEC Unit 12- Crime and its effects on society assignment 3 P5, M3, D2 Public Services BTEC Unit 12- Crime and its effects on society assignment 3 P5, M3, D2 Page | 1 What strategies Exist to reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. (P5) Analyse how the strategies used by local community public services work to reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. (M3) Crimes occur everywhere, however they do differ from place to place in there types and quantities. This is why there are many different strategies we have in place throughout the country in order to try and reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. The public services are able to develop strategies by: • Comparing their statistics of crime across the country to find patterns • Recording crime to highlight specific crimes Here are some strategies we have in place throughout the country to try and reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour: Intelligence-led policing The National Intelligence Model (NIM) is an intelligence led Business Model, utilised by Police Forces in the UK to gather and manage information in order to make the most effective decisions. The NIM was devised by the National Criminal Intelligence Service and adopted by the Association of Chief Police Officers Scotland in 2000. Essentially, the model professionalises the intelligence discipline by facilitating the identification of Priorities and the allocation of resources. The NIM is structured through a regular pattern of meetings and emphasises three key factors: • Priorities – The development and analysis of information/intelligence enables a deeper understanding of crime and non-crime issues and the identification of Priorities • Resources – Effective decision-making is guided by the identified Priorities. Finite resources and information gathering activities are coordinated and Tasked to these areas, which pose the most significant threat to the public, the community and the Organisation. • Results –The outcome of each Tasked activity is evaluated and fed back into the system, which continually develops exiting intelligence, increases the Force's ability to tackle identified problem areas and facilitates the assessment of Force priorities. The main outcomes of the NIM include: • Increased community safety • Reduced crime • Controlled disorder • Controlled criminality Identification of crime trends The national intelligence model has emerged over the years that it has been running. Everyday as the public services carry out their jobs, they also gather more intelligence information. Using every bit of data the Page | 2 services manage to gather of every different crime that have occurred in the past, the data is able to be analysed in much detail. From this the police are able to understand and recognise certain trends that are taking place in specific areas, this then allows they to target the area and reduce that type of crime. Targeting of prolific and priority offenders Offenders can be targeting by officers using intelligence results gathered, this could be from surveillance, detection of repeating criminals or people who are informers. Intelligence-led policing is an ideal way of catching a criminal, or sometimes even preventing the crime from happening if possible. Since the 9/11 attacks in the United states, intelligence-led policing has become a significant practice for the police worldwide.
