Health Care Delivery Models and Nursing Practice
The health care delivery system has dramatic changes over the past several years. The
economic changes and the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010
focused the political leaders’ attention on the need to revise the healthcare system to improve
access and quality while reducing delivery cost (Zerwekh & Garneau 2021). The outcome of the
2016 United States national elections, however, shifted discourse on strategies for improving the
delivery of health care. Notwithstanding their political leanings, nurses practicing in such an
environment must be comfortable with change and willing to take on the challenges that the
change brings (Fraher, Spetz & Naylor, 2015). This paper will discuss the effects of current and
future laws on the nursing practice and responsibility, the impact of pay for performance related
to patient outcomes, nursing leadership and management roles related to emerging trends, and
how practice of nursing and nursing roles will transform to embrace emerging trends.
Current Health Care Law or Federal Regulation.
The country has taken enormous steps through the legislation towards improving the
quality of health care and controlling the rising cost of health care (Salmond & Echevarria,
2017). Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 addresses these concerns by focusing
on health promotion and prevention rather than a disease-oriented approach (Zerwekh &
Garneau 2021). Since the implementation of the health care reform, there have been dramatic
changes in the health care system that place a new emphasis on population health, quality of
care, and the importance of the services provided (American Academy of Ambulatory Care
Nursing, 2020). Although these changes offer many opportunities nurses, there are also
immediate concerns about nurse shortages in the health workforce.
