Explain how interprofessional collaboration will help reduce errors, provide higher-quality care, and
increase safety. Provide an example of a current or emerging trend that will require more, or change the
nature of, interprofessional collaboration.
To achieve best patient outcome the problem needs to be tackled from various ankles (disciple). This not
only helps with good patient outcome but also helps pool in more resources, bring in unique skills and
knowledge to the table and helps eliminate errors, improve quality of care and provide safe and reliable
care. Looking at the current health scenario of patient centered care, family home teams, shortage of
providers and healthcare workers, it only services the purpose well (Green & Johnson, 2015).
Communication between the collaborators is clear, respectfully, concise and fruitful. They have common
goals and each one is able to contribute in a unique way to the problem solving which could not have
been possible with one person’s skill or knowledge. Interprofessional collaboration looks that the bigger
picture. “Collaborative practice in health-care occurs when multiple health workers from different
professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families,
careers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings” (Green & Johnson, 2015,
para 12).
Primary health care relies heavily on interprofessional collaboration. It is not only the primary doctor
who looks into the individual’s problem but many more professionals are involved into it. For an
individual to maintain good health we also need to look at points that help us maintain good health for
example we need to look at social determinants of health, health disparities, etc. This leads to
collaboration between doctors, nurses (to educate and provide care), community nurses, school
authorities, physical therapist, occupational therapist, behavioral health specialist, mental health
specialist, case managers, social groups, economists, transporters, governmental officials, logisticians,
teachers, daycare workers, informatics specialists, researchers, engineers (to make, design and maintain,
software for data collection, for construction of parks, buildings, etc.), local companies to provide with
resources and incentives to maintain and promote health, etc. We need a holistic approach towards the
basic primary care of an individual. All these factors contribute in its own unique way of helping an
individual maintain good health and live well with a chronic condition.
