organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Together with its
supporters, ACS is committed to helping people stay well and get well by finding cures and
by fighting back.
Critical Thinking Questions:
1. Imagine that a family friend or colleague has just been diagnosed with cancer.
Explain how the American Cancer Society might provide education and support.
What ACS services would you recommend and why?
American Cancer Society usually provides education and education to the public on types of
cancer, treatment options and their side effects, pain control, cancer screening, cancer
prevention, clinical trials and so on. American Cancer Society has a website and 24-7 hotline
telephone support to help patients, families and the public with information regarding
cancer[Ame182]. Their website is https://www.cancer.org/, and it has all types of information
about cancer. I would recommend a program known as the American Cancer Society Road to
Recovery program. The program trains volunteers to take patients to clinics and hospitals for
treatment. This makes the treatment and management of cancer easier.
2. According to statistics published by the American Cancer Society, there will be an
estimated 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year over the next decade.
What factors contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various
cancers in Americans? What changes in policy and practice are most likely to affect
these figures over time
Factors such as diet, use of tobacco, use of alcohol, physical exercise, exposure to chemicals,
exposure to radiations, viral and bacterial infections and reproductive and sexual behaviors may
increase the risk of certain types of cancer[Ame18]. The most common forms of cancer in the
United States are lung cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer. Practices and
policies that can affect the figures over time include tobacco and alcohol control, universal
healthcare that is accessible and affordable and changes in lifestyles.
3. Select a research program from among those funded by the American Cancer
Society. Describe the program and discuss what impact the research will have on the
prevention or treatment of cancer.
Screening programs can reduce the burden of cancer significantly. People should be encouraged
to go for cancer screening regularly. When cancer is diagnosed early, it can be managed and
treated completely. One great barrier to cancer screening is the lack of access to healthcare by a
large proportion of the U.S. population[Ame181]. Research shows that approximately 14 percent
of the U.S. population does not have access to health insurance and cannot get free or subsidized
cancer screening programs. Those who have health insurance face the challenge of a shortage of
funds from the government to finance cancer screening programs.
