Healthcare Policy Leaders
Hello Professor and Class,
• Explanation of how healthcare policy can impact the advanced practice nurse
profession
According to Raus, Mortier, & Eeckloo, “Health and health care are by nature profoundly
political, and thus require political action for their organization. There are three
reasons this is the case: Health is unequally distributed in society, and some
individuals or groups have more of it than others. Health has social determinants that
are amenable to political interventions. Changing people’s health for the better
requires the involvement of more than the health care sector. Decent standards of
living and well-being are essential for full citizenship and are recognized as human
rights (Raus, Mortier, Eeckloo, 2020).” APNs know a lot about patient care and safety because
of their background in the nursing field. By having that knowledge, the APN can contribute to
healthcare change and policies. If APNs are not involved in healthcare policy how can they
continue to effectively continue to practice and provide patient care and safety. Not having the
adequate policies in place, the ANP would be unable to perform their duties and it can affect the
APN, the practice, and the patient.
• Explanation of why advocacy is considered an essential component of the advance
practice nurse's role
According to Hughes, Pollitt, Coke, & D’Aoust, “The ANA states that it is a nurse’s
responsibility to promote, advocate for, and protect the rights, health, and safety of patients.
Advocacy can take many different forms, but all share the common threads of passion and action
(Hughes, Pollitt, Coke, & D’Aoust, 2019).” Advocacy is the number one part of patient care and
safety. If an APN cannot advocate for their patients then they do not need to hold a license. You
are the voice and mind of your patient if they do not understand their disease process. If
something is wrong om the healthcare policy as an APN, you should be able to advocate for your
patient to change or improve that policy.
• Discuss the four pillars of Transformational leadership and the effect it may have on
influencing policy change
There are four pillars of transformational leadership: interpersonal relationships, business skills,
professionalism, and inspirational motivation. According to Mufeed, “Over the years,
transformational leadership theory has gained immense popularity in becoming a very effective
leadership style for enhancing individual performance and increasing institutional effectiveness.
Transformational leadership behaviour contributes significantly towards attaining organizational
goals and in determining its success (Mufeed, 2019).” Interpersonal relationships can help with
