Experiment to investigate Hooke’s law.

Introduction:

This set assignment was about an experiment that consisted of testing multiple
physic laws. The author will be writing a report to discuss the objectives and aims of
this experiment. The most common physic law is Hooke’s law. Hooke’s law states
that the force that is needed to compress or extend a spring should be proportional
to the distance that it is being stretched. Hooke’s law is presented as: F = kx. When
F = force applied, k is the spring constant and x is the extension of the material. This
is usually measured in metres (Wood, 2017).

The aim of this experiment was to test out what would happen to the spring constant
when force is applied and work out the extension per force when applied. This was
to see which relevant physics law would apply to this experiment.

The evidence that has been examined was resulted due to force being applied to the
extension; this was calculated after the 20 grams of mass has been placed onto the
spring. This was then be assessed and then was examined to see if it is was
relevant to Hooke’s law.

Method:

This experiment was carried out firstly, by gaining all equipment that was needed;
such as: a firm spring, clamps, retort stand, weights and a ruler. Once everything
was then set up, the initial dimensions of the spring was measured.

The equipment was then assembled together, ensuring that everything was clamped
tightly together so it would not collapse mid experiment; then the spring was set in a
position which was exactly 30 centimetres above the table it was set upon.

Connected to the hook was the spring, the spring was measured for its initial
extension without a weight (force / mass). Once this was recorded, a mass of 20
grams was placed onto the spring; this resulted in the spring being extended lower.

For safety precautions, ensure that the feet are kept out of the area in which the
experiment will be taking place, this is in case the weights fall off. Also, ensure that
the equipment is all tight and secure together, this will prevent the heavy metal from
