, Section A: Knowledge-based Questions
Question 1:
Write three paragraphs (no more than 200 words each) in your own words.
In paragraph 1 define fiction and discuss two examples of this kind of text.
In paragraph 2 define non-fiction and discuss two examples of this kind of text.
In paragraph 3 discuss the differences between fiction and non-fiction.

Fiction and Non-Fiction
Novels and short tales are examples of fiction written from the imagination (Tutorial Letter 14). It is
not presented as reality, despite the fact that it is based on true occurrences (Tutorial Letter 501:
14). Fantasy literature and realistic fiction are two examples. Fantasy fiction is a form of fiction
whose plot is impossible to happen in real life (at least as we know it) (CliffsNotes). The plot
typically includes elements of magic or witchcraft and takes place on another planet or in a
previously unknown region of our own (CliffsNotes). Legendary creatures or talking animals (who
may or may not wear clothes and live in dwellings) as well as witches or sorcerers are usually
featured in the plot (CliffsNotes).

The word "realistic fiction" refers to works that are based on true occurrences but are not true
(Tutorial Letter 501: 20). For example, John Green's novel The Fault in Our Stars, about a teenage
girl facing cancer, falls into this category (Self-Publishing Resources, 2022). In this sense, it's
fiction about a real-life event that readers may relate to or empathize with (Self-Publishing
Resources, 2022). According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, non-fiction literature is defined
as writing based on facts and real events rather than made-up or created stories. A book or novel
based on a true-life story, for example, is not fictional; however, it is true. Another example is a film
or television show that is based on a factual story, in other words, it is not fiction.

Fiction is a style of storytelling that relies on the reader's imagination and fantasies. Non-fiction is a
type of storytelling that does not rely on the reader's imagination or dreams (Surbhi S, 2019).
Nonfiction, on the other hand, is a genre of literature that deals with true stories, people, and facts
(Surbhi S, 2019). In a nutshell, fiction refers to something that is not true or actual, whereas
nonfiction refers to a true story (Surbhi S, 2019)
