, Social Issues in the Case Study of Claudia
As it relates to the case study of Claudia, her parents moved to the United States prior to
Claudia’s birth and the family speaks primarily Spanish. The family lives in an urban area with
growing crime and the family is of lower socioeconomic status. These social issues may be a
barrier to the family finding adequate resources to benefit their family.
Culturally Competent Strategies
To utilize best practice, being culturally competent is important. The NASW Code of Ethics
describes cultural competence as, having the ability to understand the culture and recognizing the
strengths. Additionally, the practitioner should recognize their own values, beliefs, and bias’s
(NASW, 2017). Initially, understanding the identified problem from the family’s perspective is a
way to Segway into using culturally competent practice (Dettlaf, Fong, 2011). Additionally,
completing a genogram and ecomap can be beneficial to understand the culture which will assist
the practitioner in implementing culturally competent interventions and treatment plans
(Improving Cultural Competence).
Types of Data and Resources
In order to best serve Claudia and her family, it may be important to gain additional knowledge
of their culture and home environment to understand what types of resources may help the
family work through some of the presenting problems. This can assist the practitioner in
becoming culturally competent. Additionally, what natural supports are available to help the
family can be beneficial to aid in working through the identified problems.
