Dear Mayor Muriel Bowser,
I am writing to you today because I would like to address the issue of poverty. I believe that one
of the main causes of poverty has a lot to do with where a person grows up, and also where they
get their education. I was born in southeast Washington D.C and have lived here all of my life.
Every day I witnessed how hard it is for a lot of residents in Washington D.C. The poverty rates
here are very high, they are eve higher than majority of the other states. This breaks my heart to
see that there is not much being done about. I am aware of all the policy that were created to help
those living in poverty. I think those policies are great. It is amazing that families get to receive
free Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, and affordable housing. However, after doing plenty of research
these things are a “quick fix” and do not prevent poverty. They only give families minimum
benefits to make it by. Moreover, more children and young adults are affected by poverty more
than anyone else. Sauter (2018) states that there are 42 million people living below the poverty
