Purpose of and assessment criteria for Assignment 01

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to assess your ability to set a comprehension test for
learners in Grade 9; and to discuss the teaching of reading to learners in the senior
phase. The examination paper usually contains theoretical and application-type questions.
Most of the questions set in this assignment are the type of theoretical and application-
type questions you can expect to find in the examination.

Assessment criteria
The following assessment criteria will be used to assess your assignment:
 A test based on a reading passage was set that includes the following:
 comprehension-type questions and language questions.
 lower order and higher order questions.
 Instructions for answering the test, the time and the mark allocation are all
clearly indicated.
 The memorandum is comprehensive and complete.
 An explanation of how reading will be taught during the three phases of
reading.
 Ideas to encourage or motivate learners to read independently.
 The importance for learners in the senior phase to be reading proficiently.
 the poem is suitable for Grade 9 learners.
 the eight phases in Combrink’s model were explained.
 the poem was analysed according to Combrink’s model.

Question 1 (compulsory)

1.1. Choose an appropriate reading passage in the language you intend teaching for Grade
9 learners and paste it into your assignment. Compile a test, using the format of a test
or examination question paper in which you want to assess certain aspects of reading
and viewing (20 marks) and language structure and use (10 marks). The test must
be based on the reading passage and contain a variety of comprehension and language
questions.

The test must count 30 marks in total. The instructions and mark allocation must be clearly
indicated. Include a memorandum (answers) for the test in your assignment. Please consult
the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) before starting with this question.
Information on the different types of questions can be found in the CAPS under the heading
Assessment. (50)


Kindly note for question 1:
 Do not copy the reading passage and questions from a textbook. If you do, you
will be given 0 for this question.
 Try to be creative when choosing a reading passage. You may include a
newspaper article, a magazine article, a comic strip, an extract from a literary text
and so forth.
 Question 1 must be answered in the language you intend to teach.
 If you intend to teach a language that is not one of the official South African
languages (French, German or Arabic), please answer question 1 in English.
