Question 1
1.1) Name seven learning styles and explain each by giving examples.

 Visual (spatial) learner: those who prefer learning by observing things.
They prefer pictures, images, diagrams and whiteboards in order for them
to understand information better. They can easily visualise information and
have a good sense of direction, they also like drawing things.

 Aural (auditory) learner: Aural learners are good listeners who normally
learn best through verbal presentations like lectures and speeches. They
also have a good sense of rhythm and are normally musicians or singers
who are familiar with different instruments and the sounds they make.
Sounds and music are a strong suit for these learners.

 Verbal (linguistic) learner: Prefer learning through words, both in speech
and in writing. They love to read and write and can easily express
themselves. These learners usually have a vast vocabulary and excel in
speaking, journalism and debating activities.

 Physical (kinaesthetic) learner: Hands-on learners who love to move and
learn best through doing rather than seeing or hearing. Highly energetic and
physical activates and sports play a huge part in these learners’ life.

 Logical (mathematical) learner: These learners excel where there is logic,
numbers and reasoning involved. They enjoy solving complex problems, to
reason and are creative thinkers. Computer programming, science and
mathematics are normally favoured by these learners.

 Interpersonal (social) learners: These learners enjoy working in groups
and working with others, they know how to communicate effectively and
enjoy collaborating, brainstorming as well as discussing concepts and ideas
with others. Normally great listeners who are understanding and thoughtful.

 Intrapersonal (solitary) learners: These learners prefer to work alone and
to study by themselves. They are independent, self-aware and in tune with
their feeling and thoughts. They avoid crowds and learn best in a quiet place
where they can focus.

1.2) Explain the role of the Foundation Phase teacher in identifying barriers to
learning.

Foundation phase is regarded as the most critical phase for promoting interest
in education, developing positive attitudes as well as positive self-concepts. If
a child fails at this stage, he or she will be adversely affected and it’s a delicate
stage where teachers should be informed of a range of barriers to learning and
development, such as the difficulties and challenges learners’ experience, in
order to be in a position to address them and to make sure that effective
learning takes place.
