Simulation in Nursing Education
Advances with technology have revolutionized the approach in the way nursing
education was previously conducted, and as the nursing profession evolves, so do the
curriculums that shape the next generation of professionals. As of late, nursing programs across
the nation are struggling with diminishing clinical sites for nursing students, thus creating
significant problems regarding graduates not being adequately equipped to face the challenges,
or real world demands of clinical practice. The purpose of this case study is to examine the
significance in utilizing patient simulation mannequins, and its impact towards a nursing
student’s education in code scenarios.
Case Study
The educational preparedness of nurses is a crucial element that academic institutions
must consider due to patient care becoming increasingly complex. “Nurses must make critical
decisions associated with care for sicker, frailer patients and work with sophisticated, life-saving
technology” (Murray, Sundin & Cope, 2017, p. 35). This case study focuses on the academic
setting of a university, as curriculums need to redesigned current methods to better align with the
resources that are available. Patient simulation mannequins, and simulation labs are an excellent
alternative to aid in educating nursing students on how to handle and run different patient code
scenarios. These fully computerized mannequins amplify and mimic real-life comprehensive
scenarios, and physiological signs of deteriorating patients in critical events. This offers students
a fully interactive, safe practicing environment while eliminating the inherent risks of practicing
on living patients. The significance of this technology can play a profound role in education by
enhancing the students learning environment, including areas of critical thinking and reasoning,
and offer overall comfort and confident in real-life situations. The use of patient simulations has
