Position: A group of tasks assigned to one individual
Occupation: A group of jobs similar in type of work that are usually found
throughout an industry or work environment
Profession: A type of occupation that requires prolonged preparation and formal
qualifications and meets certain higher level criteria (discussed later in this
chapter) that raise it to a level above that of an occupation
Process Approach: The process approach views all occupations as points of
development into a profession situated along a continuum ranging from position
to profession
Power Approach: The power approach uses two criteria to define a profession:
How much independence of practice does this occupation have? How much
power does this occupation control?
Trait Approach: the traits that define a profession
Responsibility and Accountability of Nurses: legal, ethical, and professional
implications that include accepting responsibility for actions taken to provide
client care and for the consequences of actions that are not performed.
Nursing Union: dedication to high-quality nursing standards and improved
methods of practice by the major nursing organizations has led to improved care
and increased benefits to the public as a whole. Speak with one voice when
making its values about health-care issues known to politicians, physicians’
groups, and the public in general.
Origins of Nursing: the belief that by providing care to the ill and injured,
including individuals, families, and communities, optimal health and quality of life
could be restored or maintained.

in ministering to the sick and providing food and care for the poor and homeless.
