Describe theory regarding personality: Mahler, Sullivan, Erikson

Mahler: those who develop borderline personality disorder, there has been an engagement/issue with
feeling safe and often has components of struggles with their mother and have a fear of abandonment that
carries over to adulthood. So these things happen as we age and is fostering our growth and development
of our personality that can lead to experiencing a personality disorder.

Sullivan: we need interaction, its our interpersonal relationships that influence us, he says that our early
relationships with our parents is crucial for our personality development. Since we are driven for the need
for interaction, the purpose of all behavior is to get those needs met and to reduce anxiety. So if the person
is not getting what they need, they begin to act out to get what they need.

Erikson: we are developing personality through our lifetime through stages. From infancy to later
adulthood, we have tasks we are meant to accomplish and therefore building our personality based upon
what we were able to achieve. In ages 12-20 adolescence stage 5 (identity v. role confusion) we
experience personal identity where you realize you are different than your parents and family and we
figure out who we are, so that helps us develop our personality. If we do not achieve some stages, we can
develop a personality disorder.
