NURS: 6234 Advanced Pharmacology Semester: SPRING 3 Credits Year: 2021 Course Description This course focuses on the pharmacologic concepts commonly seen in advanced practice nursing with a focus on major pharmacological classes for selected disease states and application in therapeutic decision-making to real world encounters across the lifespan. The course will provide the student with an understanding of advanced pharmacological principles such as pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug metabolism, and dose-response relationships. Use health assessment data to select an appropriate pharmacologic regimen for patients across the lifespan. (M#3, M#6) 2. Apply knowledge of pharmacokinetics to develop a therapeutic regimen that maximizes therapeutic effectiveness while minimizing adverse reactions. (M#3, M#6) 3. Apply knowledge of pharmacodynamics to predict the response and effects associated with pharmacologic agents and herbal and natural remedies. (M#3, M#6) 4. Apply appropriate clinical guidelines for the pharmacological management of selected disease states commonly encountered with awareness of nutrition, culture, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. (M#3, M#4, M#6) 5. Prescribe pharmacologic agents pursuant to standardized policies and procedures, in conformance with applicable state and federal laws, codes and/or regulations (i.e. knowledge of Pharmacy rules and regulations, Health & Safety Code and Federal Register). (M#3, M#6) 6. Analyze the indications and actions of major drug classes, as well as the indications and actions of specific drugs within each class. (M#3, M#6) 7. Describe monitoring procedures for select drug therapies. (M#3, M#6) 8. Evaluate adverse drug reactions, drug-drug, drug-food, and drug-disease (concomitant disease) interactions, and demonstrate recognition of these implications in selecting specific pharmacotherapeutic options. (M#3, M#6) 9. Apply evidence-based patient education strategies related to the pharmacologic regimen. (M#3, M#6) Prerequisites Graduate program enrollment or permission. Publisher: F.A Davis Company: Philadelphia Web address: 4 th Addition available online via Himmelfarb Library Credit Hour Policy Over 13 sessions, students are expected to spend an average of 2.88 hours per session interacting with their instructor, which may include viewing online lectures, participating in discussion forums, Blackboard Collaborate sessions or other guided learning activities, or taking quizzes or exams (minimum of 37.5 hours for the semester). Students are also expected to work independently for an average of 5.77 hours per session on homework/assignments, which may include research activities, projects, and readings (minimum of 75 hours for the semester). Total minimum worktime = 8.65 hours/session, 112.5 hours/semester. Tuesday, 2/23/21 Time: 4pm to 8 pm EST The Midterm Examination will include content from Sessions 1 – 6, including session 6. The Midterm Exam is worth 20% of the final course grade. There will be 50 multiple choice questions on the Midterm Exam and 75 minutes will be allotted to take the exam. There will be a Final Examination in this course during Exam Week. Wednesday 4/14/21, Time: 4pm to 8 pm EST The Final Examination will include content from Sessions 7 – 13, including session 13. The Final Exam is worth 20% of the final course grade. There will be 50 multiple choice questions on the Final Examination and 75 minutes will be allotted to take the exam. The midterm exam and the final examinations in this course will be remotely proctored. When on-line course examinations are proctored remotely, students are required to use the Softwaresecure Remote Proctor System. The GW School of Nursing Exam Policy is located in the Blackboard course shell under Remote Proctor Info. Students must read the exam policy. In addition, students must read all information related to Remote Proctor. A Remote Proctor practice test must be completed a week prior to taking the midterm and the final examinations The midterm and final examinations are closed-book, closed-notes, closed browser and no electronic resources. You may not open another computer, browser, smartphone, mobile app, or electronic device in use during the exam. You may not communicate with others to obtain information or answer questions while taking the exam. You may not copy or paste the exam. The exam is to be the students’ own work product. If this is found to be untrue, students will be considered to have violated the GW Honor Code and will jeopardize their standing in the course. Please refer to the Blackboard course in the Midterm and Final Exam folder for detailed instructions on proctoring and test-taking rules. Please take note of the days and times for the midterm and final exams. Arrange your schedules now so that you are available to take the exams on the dates scheduled. No other time slots will be offered for the exam except in the case of emergency that is verified with documentation. Allowances will not be made for vacations, work schedules, travel, etc.
