Unit 9: Human Regulation and Reproduction.
Learning Aim C: Understand the role of hormones in the regulation and control of the
reproductive system.
Hormonal control of reproduction.

Describe the structure and function of reproductive anatomy
Female reproductive
P3

The uterine tubes, or fallopian tubes, are a pair of muscular tubes lined with cilia. They can be found
on both the left and both sides of a female's abdominal cavity. Fallopian tubes are one of the most
essential elements of the female reproductive system, stretching from the uterus to the ovaries. The
fallopian tube's principal job is to carry the egg cell from the ovary to the uterus once a month. It is
during this time when females experience menstruation. The fallopian tubes, on the other hand, are
responsible for delivering the fertilised egg to the uterus for implantation in the presence of sperm
and fertilisation. The fertilised egg is referred to as a zygote.

The ovaries, also known as female gonads, are a pair of oval organs located within the abdominal
cavity. They are found on the left and right sides of the uterus, as well as along the pelvic wall. The
ovarian fossa is the name given to this area. The ligaments that connect the uterus and the ovaries
work together to keep the ovaries in place. The female ovaries are responsible for three important
tasks. The first and most important duty is to guard and shield the eggs until they are ready to be
used. The second purpose is to create oestrogen and progesterone, as well as minor hormones like
inhibin and relaxin, which are key female reproductive hormones. The ovaries' third and final job is
to release one or more eggs per menstrual cycle. Ovulation is the name given to this process.

, The uterus, also known as the womb, is a hollow muscular organ that is positioned between the
bladder and the rectum and has an inverted pear shape. The endometrium, which lines the uterus
and contains a plentiful supply of blood, makes it easy for the blastocyst to implant. The uterus is
made up of several physical elements, including the isthmus, cervix, corpus, and fundus. The female
uterus serves two purposes. The first and most important role is to provide mechanical protection to
the foetus in order to prevent physical harm. The foetus' dietary needs are met by the second
function. This is to ensure that the foetus receives the nutrients it requires for normal development.

The fallopian tube fimbriae, also known as fimbriae tubae, are small, finger-like projections that
connect the fallopian tubes to the ovaries. The infundibulum is a funnel-shaped repository formed
by this. The infundibulum's primary role is to capture and channel the discharged eggs. As a result,
the eggs can readily travel from the ovaries to the uterus.

The endometrium is the uterus's innermost lining layer, which is mostly made up of mucosal tissue.
The stratum basalis and the stratum functionalis are two key layers that make up the endometrium.
The stratum basalis is an important layer that connects to the myometrium, a smooth muscle tissue
layer. The myometrium acts as a commentary for the endometrium and does not alter very much.
The stratum functionalis, on the other hand, is dynamic, changing in response to all active hormones
throughout the menstrual cycle. It's also a section of the endometrium where a fertilised egg is
implanted if conception is successful.
P3
The cervix, which is made up of stiff fibromuscular tissue, is the most distal portion of the uterus. It's
a crucial part of the female reproductive system that connects the uterus to the vaginal canal,
allowing for communication between the two compartments. Though the cervical canal is normally
relatively narrow, it can enlarge up to 10cm under the influence of hormones and pressure from the
foetal head to allow a baby to be born. The cervix's primary role is to allow menstrual blood to flow
from the uterus into the vaginal canal, as well as to guide sperm into the uterus during intercourse.

The vagina is a muscular canal in front of the rectum and behind the bladder that is lined with
nerves and mucus membranes. Furthermore, the uterus and cervix are joined by the top portion of
the vagina. The bottom section of the vagina, on the other hand, opens to the outside of the body.
As a result, the vagina may perform three important functions: receiving penis during intercourse,
providing a channel for blood from the uterus during monthly menstruation, and allowing for
birthing. The vagina can enlarge, broaden, and swell up with blood as it prepares to take the penis or
as it prepares for birthing, even though it is only approximately 9cm long.

The labia minora, is a pair of thick cutaneous folds that form a component of a woman's vulva. They
spread downwards and backwards from the mons pubis to merge with the perineum's skin.
Pigmented skin, oil-secreting glands, and coarse hair termed pubes cover the outer sides of the labia
folds following puberty. The inner sides of the labia folds, however, are smoother, with less hair and
some perspiration traces. The labia minora's primary role is to protect and surround the external
genital organs.
