The Rate of Chemical Reactions
Notes
The phrase “rate of reaction” means how fast is the reaction
or the speed of the reaction
Chemical kinetics is the study of reaction rates.
The rate of the reaction can be defined as either: The quantity of products
produced per unit time OR the quantity of reactants consumed per unit time.
In general, reactions that do not involve bond rearrangements tend to be rapid.
In general, reactions in which bonds are broken and formed tend to be slow.
Collision Theory:
1) For a reaction to proceed, particles of reactants must collide with one
another.
2) Particles must collide with the minimum amount of energy needed to react
called the activation energy. Such collisions are called effective or successful
collisions.
3) To increase the rate of a chemical reaction, it is required to increase the
frequency of effective collisions, i.e increase the number of successful
collisions per unit time.
Factors affecting rate of chemical reaction:
Nature of reactants
concentration of reactants (or pressure if a gaseous reactant)
Surface area of a solid (or particle size)
Temperature
Catalyst.
Effect of changing concentration on rate of reaction:
Increasing the concentration of a reactant increases the number of
particles in a given volume thus the reacting particles will collide more
frequently so the number of collisions will increase per unit time, thus
rate of reaction increases.
