, Question 1
The seven tips for selecting poetry for young learners are as follows.
1. Ideas and feelings should be original, true to life and creative
Children should be able to relate to poems in order to enjoy them. The
poetry must be about something that they have heard or seen in their lives
in order to get their attention.
2. The ideas expressed in the poem are relevant to your learners.
Poems must be chosen according to the interests and lifestyle of the
learners. A learner who was brought up on a farm will not enjoy or
understand a poem about the city. Poetry should also be age appropriate.
3. The poet does not preach to the learners.
Children must enjoy poetry: they must want to read it and enjoy it. If a poet
keeps going on about his ideas, it does not encourage children to pay
attention for long. They will lose interest.
4. The poem speaks from a child’s perspective and shares a child’s views
and life.
Poems must be understandable to the people reading them. Children
must be able to imagine what they are listening to. The poetry must be
about something that they have heard something about in their lives and it
must be written on a level that they can understand.
5. The content of a poem and not the illustration should be the determining
factor.
We are trying to encourage a love of reading in children. An illustration
can catch their eye and make them want to hear more and read (or listen)
more, but they should not be totally distracted by a picture.
6. Stick to narrative poems for younger learners as they enjoy these more.
A narrative poem tells a story. Children can relate to stories as they see
life as a series of stories. It enables them to understand the poem better.
