Vsim of nursing Pharmacology Toua Xiong
Guided Reflection Questions
Opening Questions
How did the simulated experience of Toua Xiong’s case make you feel?
- This was my favourite simulation by far, the orders made sense and the whole scenario seemed to
flow better than the other ones so far.
Talk about what went well in the scenario.
- The orders at the beginning of the scenario were very clear and concise that all I had to do was
the physical assessment and patient history, so I felt like I actually know what I was doing
Reflecting on Toua Xiong’s case, were there any actions you would do differently if you were to repeat
this scenario? If so, how would your patient care change?
- I repeated this scenario twice, the first time I forgot to compare the medication to the mar, so I
made sure I did that the second time. The second time I asked more in depth questions when
obtaining the history of the patient.
Scenario Analysis Questions1
What priority problem(s) did you identify for Toua Xiong?
I identified his difficulty for swallowing, pain in his throat and mouth, as well as some chest
pain that he was experiencing when completing the history assessment and asking about his
pain and pain scale.
Upon focused assessment, what was identified to be causing the priority problems listed above? Identify
the underlying causes.
- The patient was taking an oral inhaled corticosteroid, which was causing the thrush in
his mouth, which the provider then ordered nyastatin for.
Based on your assessment, what priority teaching does Toua Xiong need?
- The patient should engage in teaching on how to properly use his inhaler and the side
effects of corticosteroids and what to expect. When he is done inhaling his medication
he needs to rinse his mouth with water.
Explore community resources for patients with COPD.
- I checked out the Trudell Medical website for a list of their online resources for people
living with COPD. They recommended The Lung Association which offers resources for
smoking cessation, current research and more. Living well with COPD is a self
management
