Using Authentic Materials and the Internet in the Language Classroom
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Authentic materials are written or spoken texts that is not included in the course book or were not
written for language teaching. These texts are chosen from the real world. Authentic texts are very
important in foreign language teaching because they provide real life examples of language use in
everyday situations. This can make the class more interesting for the students because these texts
can remind students that there are people who use the target language daily and the students can
be educated on new topics. The language used in authentic materials provides as a source of input
that foreign language learners need for acquiring the English language. Very important, the text
needs to be an appropriate level for the learners.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
The 12 vocabulary items chosen from my text are words that can be used in everyday language.
Although there are a few words that are challenging, it is important for me as teacher to include
words like that into texts to challenge the very advanced learners. The two phrases “wreak havoc”
and “sounding the alarm” are two important phrases to teach the students because they are not
phrases you can always interpret as literal, especially “sounding the alarm.” The class the text is
intended for are adults, so the vocabulary chosen are words that they can use in their everyday
lives. In my chosen text I had to shorten the text quite a lot because the word count was too much.
Under each topic there were a lot more in-depth discussion. I only kept the facts I think was
important for the students to know (the original text is included below the shortened one). The
information I kept is to the point and the language used is appropriate for the level of the students
in the class.
