, INTRODUCTION
Ever since the Covid Pandemic started in 2020, the way of working has changed drastically.
Employees mostly worked from home, and when they did work at the office a lot of alterations had
to be made. These alterations have a big impact on the organisation and its employees and therefore
it needs to be handled carefully. That is why the COVID-19 pandemic has proven that Facility
Management plays the most important part in the prevention of spreading the virus at the
workplace. This essay begins by describing the way COVID-19 is spread and the ways of preventing
that. Then it shows how the preventions are done by the Facility Management department.
SPREADING OF COVID-19
The way that COVID-19 enters the body is through the respiratory system, this consist out of the
nose, mouth, and airways. When a person had COVID-19, there are millions of copies of the virus
inside their body. These particles are mostly found in the lungs, but also in the throat and the nasal
cavity. This means that when a person with COVID-19 shouts, sneezes, or coughs, they spread air
with droplets that contain the virus. This can then transmit the virus to others that are in the near
vicinity of the infected person. (RIVM, 2021)
It is very unlikely that COVID-19 spreads through surfaces, such as doorhandles or keyboards,
however it is possible. Nevertheless, this has been researched in a laboratory, which means that the
experiment was done under ideal conditions, which will rarely occur outside of the laboratory. The
way people might become infected this way, is by touching the surfaces and then touching their
eyes, nose, or mouth without having cleaned their hands before. (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2021)
Infected people can be contagious, whether or not they have COVID-19 symptoms, and thus spread
the virus to other people. Infected people are the most infectious early in their illness, which is the
time COVID-19 is spread the most. (WHO, 2020)
There are certain situations where COVID-19 can spread more easily. This is mostly when people are
in close proximity to each other for longer periods of time. When the people are inside, especially
with poor ventilation, the risks of spread are higher then outdoors. (Aschwanden, 2020)
