Descriptive statistics
Chapter 1
individuals= objects described by a set of data
Variable= any one characteristic of an individual
Categorical variable places individuals into one of several groups.
● Nominal variables purely qualitative and unordered. (yellow,green, blue)
● Ordinal variables can be ordered abstractly (strongly agree, mildly agree)
Quantitative variable takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations such as
adding and averaging make sense
- have a unit of measurement.
● continuous variables= can take any numerical value over an interval. (length)
● Discrete= only have limited finite number (number of legs on a person)
Distribution of a variable tells us how often it takes these values
