Unit 5 assignment 1

In this report I will be talking about why promoting equality and diversity is important
for individuals with different needs, the skills and personal attributes service providers
should use when taking care of individuals with different needs and what methods
they could use to build relationships with these individuals. I will also be analysing the
impact of preventing discrimination for individuals and how that has been successful
in the two case studies.

Discrimination and anti-discriminatory practice:

Discrimination is when a healthcare or care provider treats you differently and worse
than someone else for certain reasons. Discrimination is “the practice of unfairly
treating an individual or group of individuals differently from other people or group of
people”. It means treating an individual unfairly because of who they are or if they
have a characteristic that people don’t like. These characteristics are protected by the
Equality act 2010.

The belief learnt: “this group of people are lesser than me because…”
The emotion thought: “I dislike this group of people”
The action shown: “ Treating people in these groups differently from others”.

There are 4 types of discrimination:

Direct discrimination is when someone is treated unfairly because of a personal
characteristic this could be seen when someone calls someone a racist name. The
individual doing the discriminating could do it in a rude, violent or aggressive manner.

Indirect discrimination is an act of accidental or unintended discrimination an example
of this could be a job advert requiring all men to be clean shaven when die to religious
reasons some men cannot. It is harder to prove this kind of discrimination because the
way it is laid out is hard to understand for most. It can also be presented as a rule or
policy that is in place.

Unfair discrimination is when a person is treated unfairly compared to someone else
this can be seen when two people are interviewed for a job and one person isn’t
considered because they are older than the other candidate although they have the
same qualifications and experience.

Positive discrimination is when individuals are treated superiorly because they have a
certain characteristic. This can be seen when a service has few ethnic minorities at a
certain level so the service provider appoints minorities for that position.

The impact of discrimination on a service users that experience discrimination is that
they would be affected emotionally and physically. If an individual has been
discriminated against by a healthcare professional within a healthcare setting, they
may feel as if they are being neglected or don’t belong there. This could then lead to
the individual experiencing anxiety, sadness, depression, feelings of emptiness and
guilt. If an individual endures this they will not only be affected emotionally and
mentally. It could affect the individual as a person. The individuals physical health
could be affected due to the negative impacts of the discrimination.

The individual could also be affected socially. The individual may feel withdrawn from
their normal social situations. They could have developed this way of thinking because

1

,they are confused as to why the healthcare practitioner discriminated against them.
The social impact of discrimination on an individual can cause them to isolate
themselves this results in a lack of support from friends and leads to a weak sense of
belonging.

The physical impact of discrimination may be changes in appearance like new bruises,
health conditions worsening this can include weight loss, increased blood pressure and
stress.

The emotional impact of discrimination can be the individual having no sense of
belonging this can lead to poor mental health.

The intellectual impact can be seen through a lack of focus which can lead to low
achieving.

The impact of preventing discrimination is that the individual would feel included in
society and in their care, safer in how they are looked after, more content with their
needs, feel happy and willing to talk about any problems that arise and protected from
any harm. They would feel as if they are being respected and cared for in the right
way. This would mean they would become more confident when communicating their
needs to a service provider. The individual would feel more valued and involved in
planning their own care.

An individual could have a low self esteem due to discrimination which could have a
chain reaction effect and lead to anxiety and depression. When an individual is treated
differently because of characteristics they may become stressed and could
occasionally turn to measures to change themselves drastically, this could be surgery,
weight loss/gain or withdrawal from society. If an individual withdrew themselves from
the norms of society they could start to think in different ways and develop a fear of
rejection because society isn’t accepting them, show anger and develop a thought
that its because they are who they are that they experience this discrimination, if the
discrimination carried on, they could begin to self hate and take it out on themselves
which could drastically affect their health.

It is important to stop discrimination quickly to prevent malpractice or abuse from
occurring. It’s the care workers or service providers duty to understand why it’s
important to avoid discriminatory language and behaviour. I believe discrimination is
wrong and can lead to a chain reaction effect of negative emotions for an individual. It
can cause many problems such as racism and stereotypes which stop everyone being
treated equally and fairly. Promoting anti discriminatory practice is important as it will
help professionals help find individuals problems and concerns and helps them be
positive in their practice.

If Robert feels as if he is not being discriminated against, he would be more open
about being a member of the transvestite community and feel more secure in the
choices his care providers have made. It will make him feel like he doesn’t have to
have any worries and fears that he will have to change to have the same opportunities
as heterosexuals. This would increase his self worth, resulting in him being less likely
to suffer from mental health issues that may have arisen form being different from the
majority. This will boost his confidence and make him feel as if he is equal and not
being treated differently because of his situation.

From one view anti discriminatory practice is promoted for Jim because the providers
involved have tried to meet his individual needs by making him care plan and
providing him with at home support. Also by focusing on issues he needs help with and
taking a person centred approach. However Jim may feel as if he is being

2

, discriminated against because of the amount of people involved in his care. He may
also feel like his dignity isn’t being preserved on the occasions he soils himself. Jims
personal preferences haven’t been fulfilled here as he has shown previously that he
prefers to dress himself. Overall, although Jim may feel as if he isn’t doing tasks for
himself that he is competent to do, the multidisciplinary team have tried their best to
fulfil his needs. `However it can be challenging to meet every service users individual
needs at all times.

Anti discriminatory practice is treating everyone fairly, not demonstrating favouritism
and stopping people from participating in activities. Anti discriminatory practice is the
action taken to stop or prevent discrimination. This can help for issues regarding: race,
religion, gender and class. It takes into account the different ways people act with
other individuals. Discrimination can come from both the service user or provider so
its important both parties are acceptant of one another. Anti discriminatory practice is
shown in Roberts case study. He has some problems communicating and the care plan
clearly states if needed ask him to repeat himself. This is an example of anti
discriminatory practice because Robert has speech and language difficulties and the
care plan has made it evident to stop issues arising a carer can simply ask him to
repeat himself. It is important to promote anti discriminatory practices in this situation
so that Robert can have equal treatment if this wasn’t obtained, it could have arisen
some problems.

It is important for health and social care workers to use anti discriminatory practice in
their working environment to stop issues such as prejudice arising. This empowers the
individuals using the service and those providing it. The initiatives aimed at preventing
discrimination in care are advocacy services that allow those that struggle with their
health and wellbeing or health and social care services. It makes sure that their voices
are heard even when not directly expressed by them about experiences and views to
wishes and feelings. This stops discrimination as it makes sure all issues are heard,
understood and listened to.

There are ways to prevent discrimination, these can be through access, diet, support
and advocacy services:
Access: wider corridors, rams, disabled toilets, hearing loops.
Diet: choices for people with cultural preferences and medical conditions.
Support: different language options, interpreters, translators.
Advocacy services: speaking on behalf of someone else.

Equality and diversity:

The definition of equality is “the state of being equal, especially in status, rights or
opportunities”. Equality is about being equal in having the same rights and
opportunities as others. Equal treatment is something individuals want but some may
need more support because of an impairment. This helps people with disabilities be
equal to others in a workplace because they may need extra measures put in place for
them to be equal to their co workers. An example is treating a woman in religious
clothing the same as other people. Equality is important in health and social care
because it helps individuals feel indifferent and valued. If people were not treated
equally, it would begin to cause problems and an unharmonious environment.

The definition of diversity is “ the concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and
respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique and recognising our
individual differences”. Diversity is a range of things that are different. It is people
being different, thinking different things, looking different to the care worker, believing
