STUDY OF COOLING CURVES:
A cooling graphically shows the change in state of substances from liquid to solid.
Aim:
• To find out the accuracy of the thermometers.
• To study the cooling curve of paraffin wax.
• To study the cooling curve of stearic acid and its rate of cooling.
Calibration of thermometers:
Equipment:
• Boiling hot water.
• Ice.
• Alcohol thermometer
• Digital thermometer.
• Timer.
• Beakers
Risk assessment:
• There was a risk of burns from the boiling hot water. This was prevented by wearing lab coats and
also taking care while using the hot water.
• In case any burns had occurred during the experiment, the injured person would have
splashed water on the injured part, and also medical attention would have been provided to
the parson.
• There was also a risk of cuts in case the glass equipment broke, this was prevented by wearing lab
coats and goggles.
• In case there were any breaks, the tutor in charge was immediately informed in order to prevent
the risk of cuts. If cuts had occurred during the practical, medical attention would have been
provided
to the injured person.
Method:
Using ice:
1) A beaker was filled with ice cubes, and then some water was put in the beaker.
2) The water was stirred and left to sit for 3 minutes.
3) The ice was stirred again, and then thermometers (digital and alcohol) was placed in it.

4) After 3 minutes, the reading on the thermometer was O C.This reading was recorded of results,
and the thermometer was offset.
Using boiling hot water:
1) A beaker of water was boiled.
2) Once it was boiled, the thermometers (digital and alcohol) were both put in the water. No part of
the beaker was touched.
3) After 3 minutes, the readings on the thermometers were read and recorded on a table of results.
