Psy 402 Topic 5 DQ 2 Discuss one type of memory deficit, including what part of the brain is affected and how memory processing is interrupted. Hi Professor and class, “Memory deficits and loss, known collectively as amnesia, can result from brain damage caused by surgery, disease, and physical or psychological trauma”(Gazzaniga, Ivry & Mangun, 2018). There are different forms of amnesia. One form is amnesia is called retrograde amnesia. It affects one thalamus and hippocampus. With retrograde amnesia, a person is not able to remember incidents that may happen prior to the development of the amnesia. However, they may be capable of memorizing new things that happen post-diagnosis (The Human Memory, 2019). Reference Gazzaniga, M., Ivry, R., & Mangun, G. (2018). Cognitive neuroscience: The biology of the mind (5th ed.). New York, NY: Norton. ISBN-13: 3170 Retrieved from The Human Memory. (2019). Retrograde Amnesia. Retrieved from Dear Proff Evans and Class, In contrast to Alzheimer's disease, where other cognitive skills and the ability to live independently are affected, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is defined by deficits in memory that do not significantly impact daily functioning. Memory problems may be minimal to mild and hardly noticeable to the individual. Several types of dementia, including : Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), HIV Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), and Vascular Dementia as well as amnesia and complications brought on by parkingsons disease are all examples of conditions that bring on human memory deficit in human beings. Furthermore a surprisingly common source of memory loss symptoms is a Vitamin B-12 deficiency. Vitamin B-12 intake is necessary for healthy brain function, and also maintaining intact myelin sheaths (the protective covering around nerves.) Symptoms of Vitamin B-12 deficiency include: memory loss and dementia symptoms, numbness and tingling of the arms and legs, difficulty with balance and walking, and mood changes (especially depression). Medial temporal lobe structures, especially the hippocampal formation and associated cortical and subcortical structures, are most often associated with episodic memory loss. Parietal lobe also assists with verbal short term memory and damage to the supramarginal gyrus cause short term memory loss. References:
