PROMOTION OF DIGITAL LITERACY IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES
2. Introduction
Digital literacy refers to an individual’s ability to locate, evaluate and use digital
information, encompassing both technologies such as computers, and services such as e-
mail. It can also include their ability to deal with and make sense of the amount of
information they receive (Goulding, 2001). The kinds of technology and levels of access
available have a significant impact on digital literacy. One specific component of digital
literacy includes what is known as information literacy, which is the ability to recognize
when information is needed, find and evaluate the information and use it effectively.
People with access to digital technologies but who are not digitally literate face
challenges.
Digital literacy also combines different types of literature related to it. The study will
focus on three different types of literature, namely; New media literacy which is the
ability to critically and suitably consume messages in a variety of digital channels,
Information literacy which is the ability to recognise when information is needed, find
and evaluate the information and use it effectively and Reproduction literacy which is
the ability to use digital technology to create a new piece of work or combine existing
pieces of work together to make it your own.
3. Aim of the study
The aim of the study is to investigate if the EML public libraries promote digital literacy.
4. Research problem
In today’s world it is a requirement to be digitally literate in order to be able to function
in a capacity that enables one to be more successful. Over the last few decades our
environment has evolved into a digital environment. Libraries are known as
powerhouses of information; they are democratic institutions concerned with promoting
scholarship by providing easy access to the information existing in whatever format.
Libraries have tried their best to adopt the technological or any such developments for
ensuring easy accessibility to information required by patrons. There is a huge need to
prioritize digital literacy as the core service of libraries. Digital literacy plays a vital role
since it assists library users to gain the ability to use technology effectively and efficiently
(Rolan and Denison, 2015). The researcher will investigate the promotion of digital
literacy in EML public libraries, based on the problem description above.
5. Objectives
To determine how librarians in eThekwini Municipal Libraries are promoting
digital literacy to patrons.
To find out if there is any training or programme on digital literacy that is
provided for patrons in eThekwini Municipal libraries.
