Secondary i. results when the pituitary gland is dysfunctional and does not secrete thyroid- stimulating hormone (TSH) 2. Review the hyperthyroid med PTU propylthiouracil indications, mech of action a. Indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism (grave’s disease/thyroid storm). Classed as antithyroid b. Works by inhibiting the incorporation of iodine molecules into the amino acid tyrosine. c. This works to impede the formation of thyroid hormone. d. Propylthiouracil has the ability to inhibit the conversion of T3 to T4 in the peripheral circulation. e. Pregnancy category D 3. Review in depth about warfarin and heparin including lab tests and antidote associated with each a. Warfarin (Coumadin) i. Most commonly prescribed oral anticoagulant ii. Careful monitoring of the prothrombin time/international normalized ratio (PT/INR) iii. Inhibits vitamin K synthesis by bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract iv. Inhibits production of vitamin K–dependent clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X, which are normally synthesized in the liver v. May be started while the patient is still on heparin until PT/INR levels indicate adequate anticoagulation vi. Full therapeutic effect takes several days vii. Antidote is vitamin K
