Introduction to Recruitment & Selection Process
In this assignment I will be explaining the Tesco business recruitment and selection process and give
reasons for their process. Recruitment is the process of finding the correct individual for a particular
job in a company1. Where else, the selection process refers to the methods used to choose the most
suitable candidate for a particular job. For example, Tesco process of selecting candidates focuses on
Skills such as communication skills, motivational, punctual, and a quick learner2.

Tesco plc trading as Tesco, is a British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer
headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, England. It is the third-largest retailer in the world measured
by gross revenues and the ninth-largest in the world measured by revenue3. Tesco is the biggest
private sector employer in the UK. The company has more than 360,000 employees worldwide. In
the UK, Tesco stores range from small local Tesco Express sites to large Tesco Extras and
Superstores. Around 86% of all sales are from the UK. Tesco operates in 12 countries outside the UK,
including China, Japan and Turkey. It has recently operated in the USA as well. Tesco’s strategy
includes diversifying and growing the business by international expansion 4.

Explain reasons for recruitment of staff in Tesco
As Tesco is a large company will have a regular recruitment process for reasons such as:

Staff turnover, Tesco’s turnover rate among front-line workers has increased due to the coronavirus
pandemic, as some workers may have got the virus or some may be self-conscious therefore leaving
their jobs. Tesco had to recruit more employees to fill in these gaps within a time period.
Furthermore, Tesco has a record of 420,000 employees 5. So in the long term, there would be a high
rate of retiring staff members and more job places will be available for new staff. This would lead to
high demands of staff and high costs leading to a decrease in sales turnover.

To fill in new posts created by more product development Tesco will recruit new employees with
high skills, this would improve the businesses productivity and efficiency. For example, employees
would be needed as the market expands and new stores are opened. Tesco is one of the biggest
companies therefore they would have many departments that would require well skilled and trained
employees to meet customers’ demands and improve the business products and services which will
therefore satisfy their customers leaving them with a good reputation and higher revenue as
customers would stay loyal and purchase goods from Tesco as they are trustworthy. Tesco would
also recruit employees to promote existing staff to a higher-level job within the organisation. For
example, during the Covid lockdown Tesco created 16,000 new permanent jobs 6.

Tesco business runs in 12 countries outside UK, it is rapidly growing with a overall growth rate of
4.6%7. Therefore, with this growth the business would need to recruit more employees to help Tesco
continue this progress. For example, if the number of sales and customers increase this means the
business would need to employ more employees to help manufacture and deliver goods and

, services. Tesco would need local employees to help in the warehouse, nationally to provide
customer service and internationally to help build a trusting relationship with their customers. Tesco
may also decide to open their business in new countries therefore they would need to recruit new
teams within the country such as delivery and manufacturing teams. If they fail to recruit, bad
customer service would be provided and they won't be able to meet customer demands therefore
leading to bad reputation and a decrease in revenue.

When the Tesco system changes, job roles also change due to rapid technology advancing. For
example, in 1995 Tesco launched a club card 8. Therefore, some employees may have been promoted
to this department or Tesco would have recruited more employees in order to provide more
customer service. They may have recruited younger employees in order to handle technological
transitions due to older employees lacking knowledge about technology.

Tesco is a retail industry therefore seasonal fluctuations can occur on occasional events such as
Christmas, New Year’s, festivals and Black Friday; meaning their sales volume would increase.
Therefore, Tesco will need to recruit more employees in order to meet the demand in seasonal
times and to deliver goods and services. For example, during Christmas in 2019 Tesco recruited
9,000 more employees9.

The business will also need to recruit extra employees to replace or fill in the place for employees
who are sick, are on leave or who have quit their jobs due to personal reasons. They would also need
to recruit long term workers in order to fill in the gaps for employees who are on leaves such as
holidays or maternity leave.

Recruitment methods

Traditional recruitment
Traditional methods of recruitment are less common
in today’s environment. The process includes job
analysis, job description and sharing it on various
platforms such as newspapers, social media platforms,
career portals or online job boards, to attract job
seekers10. Traditional methods also involve sending
candidates’ CV or other documentation through post.

An advantage of traditional recruitment is that it
enables Tesco and the candidate to build a better
relationship through their process. This can be done by meeting face to face and submitting all the
documentation required such as the CV, application form and cover letter. Having a good
relationship would allow better communication and understanding therefore allowing Tesco to make
the right decision on recruiting a candidate who has the ability to carry out tasks in their working
environment. This will also relate to staff loyalty therefore resulting in Tesco employees to work at
Tesco for a longer period of time.
